Twelve Pears

Twelve pears hanging high,
Twelve knights riding by ;
Each knight took a pear,
And yet left eleven there!

    This nursery rhyme has a variant that is a riddle too.

    There were 12 pears hanging by.
    12 men were riding by.
    Eachman took one.
    How many were left?

    The answer is: “eleven”; Eachman is a person’s name.
